Bone Placement and Waist Reduction Geometry
A 4-inch waist reduction on a corset top is not a single number. It is a load distribution across the bones, and each bone carries a different share. The front busk takes 30 percent of the load. The side bones take 25 percent each. The back bones take 10 percent each, because the lacing gap absorbs the rest. If your tech pack does not specify which bones are flat steel and which are spiral, we will default to spiral on the sides and flat at the center back and front, which works for most bodies but not for all. For a client with a 26-inch natural waist who wants a 22-inch corseted waist, the side bones need to be 7 mm spiral steel, not 5 mm, or they will bend inward at the waistline after three wears. This is the kind of detail that separates a corset top that holds its shape from one that collapses, and it belongs on the spec sheet, not in a phone call after the first sample fails.
The fabric you choose for the outer shell has a tension profile, and it must match the boning load. A stretch mesh with 15 percent elastane will not hold a 4-inch reduction, no matter how many bones you add. We test every fabric for tension on a 10-inch by 4-inch sample strip, stretched to 1.5 times its length, and we record the recovery. If the fabric recovers to within 5 percent of its original length, we will use it for a moderate reduction corset top. If it recovers to within 10 percent, we will line it with a non-stretch coutil. If it recovers to more than 10 percent, we will tell you it will not work, and we will suggest an alternative before we cut. This test takes 20 minutes, and it saves a sample round. Put the fabric tension and the lining requirement on your tech pack, and we will not need to guess.
Eyelet and Lacing Hardware
The lacing gap at the back of a corset top is where the waist reduction happens, and the eyelets that hold the lacing carry the full tension of the garment. We use size 0 eyelets, which are 4 mm internal diameter, set at 18 mm spacing, for a standard corset top. If your tech pack specifies a 2-inch lacing gap, we will place the eyelets to allow that gap at the target waist measurement. If you do not specify the gap, we will default to 2 inches, which is the industry standard, but it may not match your fit model. A gap that is too small means the corset will not close, and a gap that is too large means the back panels will overlap and the eyelets will pull through the fabric. We reinforce every eyelet with a twill tape backing, which is 12 mm wide, and we ask you to put the eyelet size, spacing, and gap on your tech pack. A pack that names the eyelet but not the gap is the most common cause of a second sample round on corset tops.
A tech pack that is 90 percent complete is not 90 percent as good as a complete one. It is a first sample that is 90 percent right, which means it is wrong, and it means a second sample, which adds 7 to 10 days to your lead time and $120 to $200 to your sample cost, depending on the complexity of the garment. We track this data across our sample room, and the numbers are consistent: a corset top tech pack that specifies the bone width but not the channel width has a 60 percent chance of a second sample round. A pack that specifies the channel width but not the lacing gap has a 40 percent chance. A pack that specifies all three has a 15 percent chance, and in most of those cases, the second sample is for a minor adjustment, not a re-cut. The spec sheet is not a formality. It is the difference between a garment that ships on time and one that does not.
What We Need From You
Before we cut a single panel for your corset top, we need a tech pack that includes the bone type and width, the channel width and tolerance, the fabric tension and lining requirement, the eyelet size and spacing, and the lacing gap. We also need the point of measure for the waist, which is 1 inch above the navel for a standard corset top, and the target waist measurement after reduction. If you have a fit model, we need her measurements. If you do not, we will use our standard size 8 fit model, which has a 27-inch natural waist. These details are not optional. They are the geometry of the garment, and they decide whether your corset top sells or gets returned.
Put them on the tech pack, and we will build you a garment that holds its shape, fits the body, and ships on time. Leave them off, and we will guess, which is not a service we charge for, but it is a cost you pay in time and sample fees.
